Re-envision
Through the research made on Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall, I found that it has a slight similarity to the Vitra Design Museum, which is why I have chosen it as a reference to my re-envisioning of the Vitra. Keeping the abstract and playful theme of both buildings, the idea that came to mind was to create a kids playhouse. This idea also has a relation to ‘Mickey Mouse’s Clubhouse’ that already exists today as the kid’s house of fun.
The playhouse itself will be structured in an abstract way, keeping with Gehry’s theme. However, it will somehow link to the structure of the Mickey Mouse Playhouse – since the playhouse is only an animations, it would be quite interesting to see it come to life.
The structure will include different rooms each designed to suit different age groups – each containing different activities. The colours used will all be user friendly, keeping the Mickey Mouse theme colours (red, black, yellow and white), throughout the whole building.
Independent Research
The Walt Disney Concert Hall, opened in 2003 at Los Angeles, is a unique building in its own sense. Frank Gehry related a lot of his work to the notion of artistic harmony and the fact that it constantly informs a unique style. One of Gehry’s ideas was moulded together by the thought that music, fine arts and literature allow the rising of ideas and the ultimate creation of art. Through this idea he created the Walk Disney Concert Hall.
From the making of the roof to the unusual dimensions of the rooms situated in the building, the Concert Hall creates a scene and work of art which allows itself to unfold in the eyes of the viewers. The structure itself introduces these viewers to a feeling of completion to the buildings surroundings and to the empty space around it. As mentioned in the book ‘Symphony – Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall’, Frank Gehry quotes: “It was designed from the inside out and was meant to invite people to come inside. It was intended to be accessible to everyone.” (New York 2003, p.11).
